Gurez is a high valley in the Bandipora district of north Kashmir, following the Kishanganga River between steep, forested mountains. It is one of the more remote places a visitor to Kashmir can reach by road.
The journey takes most of a day and the facilities are simple. In return you get a landscape and a way of life that feel very different from the main tourist circuit.
The road to Gurez leaves Bandipora, climbs past views of Wular Lake and crosses the Razdan Pass before dropping to the Kishanganga. Dawar is the main town and where most visitors stay.
Above Dawar stands Habba Khatoon, a pyramid-shaped peak named after the 16th-century Kashmiri poet. The valley is home to the Dard-Shin community, who speak Shina and build traditional houses from logs.
Gurez lies close to the Line of Control, so there are checkposts on the way and identity documents are checked. Snow closes the road for a large part of the winter.

The landmark mountain of the valley. A spring at its base is a popular short visit.
The clear, fast river that runs the length of the valley.

A string of log-house villages further up the river beyond Dawar.

Drive or walk to the base of the peak and the spring below it.
Continue up the valley to quieter villages, subject to road conditions and permissions.
The riverbank is the simplest and best place to spend an evening.
Accommodation is basic, but it puts you in the middle of village life.
