Aru is a small village set in a bowl of meadows and conifer forest, reached by a scenic road that climbs above Pahalgam along a tributary of the Lidder.
It is calmer than Betaab Valley and is the starting point for some of the best-known treks in Kashmir.
The village has a handful of guesthouses and tea shops, with grazing land all around it. Walking a little way beyond the last houses is enough to leave the crowds behind.
Trails from Aru lead to Lidderwat, the Kolahoi Glacier and the twin lakes of Tarsar and Marsar. These are multi-day treks that need a guide and proper preparation.
